How to build your own boat .. fast!
From time to time I asked "I would love own boats al, it is difficult to build one? "It's really surprising the looks of doubt when I answer," No, no, no! If you know what to do and you're ready to invest a little time you can do it easily! "The next questions that usually follow are" How long? " And "How much?" Well, in general, which is really the "How long is a piece of string question!" And may vary slightly.
People differ of course, and which can take two or three weekends for one may painstakingly for others, take a couple of months. The short answer is "it depends how fast you work, but two or three weekends should be average at a rough estimate. "In 1998, the Wooden Boat Association chose a Dolphin a 16 to build the "Down by the River Festival" in Brisbane. Despite several cases of VB boys managed to build a 16 'Dolphin (version non sailing) in two afternoons and present it to a lucky winner.
HOW MUCH?
Once again, quite tricky, some people will squirt on camel-hair brushes and six pairs of disposable coveralls and gloves news … They have already spent thirty odd dollars more than the next chapter has yet his fist wrapped around his dollars. For the average home builder, they should be able to build this boat for about $ 700.00 to $ 1,000.00, if do not take into account their own time. Work thirty to forty hours should be sufficient to complete this project to a reasonable level. Remember, the material costs vary greatly across the country and this must be taken into consideration!
WHAT KIND OF BOAT IS IT?
The DOLPHIN 12
First, it is a simple and composite epoxy glass ply boat, just under twelve feet by six feet in beam, big enough for an adult couple and an engine up to about five to seven horses. It is stable, open, has a couple of seats and take the coastal waters in its stride. I prefer think of it as an open family / fishing craft that can be used in rivers, estuaries and lakes.
The DOLPHIN 16 … VERSIONS OF SUPPLY AND SAILING
This is essentially the same as 12 but is made of 4.5 sheets of 6mm ply and is further strengthened to the sailing version by way of extra glass in the fields of lock and longitudinal stringers for the floors. There are three platforms to choose from. The 'Batwing Gunter Rig', the "Balanced Lug Sail 'or' Standing Lug Rig '. See diagrams. In addition, the sailing version has a 10 'x 10 "keel that is ballasted by the inclusion of two 35 kilo lead ingots glassed into the keel during construction. Also, there is a rudder constructed of Oregon, covered with glass. If Please note that a simple version of plywood and glass can also be constructed if necessary. The mast is a solid piece Oregon 12 ' August 1 "of the spar for the standing lug rig version.
THE DOLPHIN 19 KETCH
The 19 foot Ketch is the latest addition to the fleet. She is also a boat without framework, an extended Dolphin 16 with a few additions. The dimensions are 19 feet by six feet beam and has a freeboard of 20 inches, but can be extended to 22 inches, to the detriment of the curve of the pure line. There is a front axle 5 feet back to the main mast. This mast is situated immediately behind the bulkhead The bridge is on. There is storage under the platform for extra flotation or gear storage required. The entrance to this area is through the cutout in the wall.
The machine has a choice of two keel configurations, an eighteen inch keel or a twelve inch keel depth that works around. two thirds along the length of the boat. This is constructed from solid Oregon and provides the strong backbone needed frameless design. There are also plans for twin bilge keels that allow easy beaching and use of a keel slightly shallower depth, around 9 / 10 inches. Ballast for the boat is four lead ingots that are built into the keel itself and is about 150 lbs in weight. It is envisaged that the boat, ballasted, should be in the area of ??some 450 lb (210 kg) unloaded.
The rig is a configuration twin mast Ketch with an area of ??19 sq. ft. jib, the mainsail, 56.5 sq. ft. and the mizzen mast, 24 square feet. This is approximately 100 square feet total sail. The platform has a leg up, without a ramp with a top spar approximately eight feet long. A gaff rig is also possible for this boat, in fact the first Dolphin 19 customers in South Australia has opted for this platform. The machine is designed to sail with jib and mizzen alone and should provide much more space on board in this configuration. For any prolonged jib / mizzen configuration a slightly larger jib area would provide better balance of sail and power.
The twin masts are either clear Oregon or clear spruce but the spruce alternative would be enough expensive! They are planed round from four inch square stock and are quick to do if an electric planer is used. They are soaked in epoxy and then finished in ultra-violet resistant varnish to prevent "trafficking" of epoxy. An unusual feature of this design is the twin galvanized wire stays on each mast. This gives a traditional look but also adds an important safety factor. Plates solid Oregon chain, placed outboard of the Hull provide a charming old fashioned classic look to this small sailboats very versatile.
As with any Dolphin range the hull is beamy and commences by a vee sectioned bow that falls to a flat bottom of the hull 7 degrees to provide a lot of stability of the beam. There is no word in this design, but this does not mean that one could not be easily added if necessary. The primary reason for not including a floor in the original design was for access to the dock for cleaning and to prevent water stagnating in the boat unseen, a major cause of damage to boats left unattended for a while.
The boat is designed to take an outboard engine (10-12 hp approx) that could be attached to the transom with an outboard bracket but it is possible to adapt an inboard if necessary. This requires the addition of engine beds and a floor and a was omitted really because of the extra time and labor required for installation.
This machine was designed with intention to provide Versatile easy to build "good little boat" for the owner who would like a boat that is a "no frills" design that can be constructed using simple, easy build techniques that really make the difference with time to build excess. There is nothing more frustrating than hacking way for weeks building complicated frames that must interlock with sophisticated "mortise and tenon" and others, requiring wood very advanced skills that are generally a little beyond the average DIY chap. If you can use a jig saw, tape measure and a sanding machine and mix up epoxy glue, the Dolphin 19 will be an easy project for you. Do not forget that we are only a phone call far and we are proud to contribute to our customer service "line" which is available to advise and assist at any time during normal business hours!
The Dolphin 19, with its simple, in terms of two A1 page instruction book and eliminates the need for tedious and tracing calculations normally required. It is really more like a simple case of "join the dots' building that the Dolphins are becoming well known for. A one hundred and fifty owners can not all be wrong!
WHAT TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION IS IT?
Basically, the foot 12 is built from three sheets and half sheets of 1220 x 2440 6mm plywood and 16 foot four and a half sheets of 1220 x 2440 6mm plywood and the 19-foot ketch, six sheets of 1220 x 2440. They are constructed using a single bite "and glue method "using epoxy resin glue thickened with Q-Cells or microspheres and then layered on the outside with a solid layer of fabric 300 g biaxial glass and epoxy resin. The instructions in the detailed plan to the last degree every technique that will be needed to build these boats. The plans, known as method "EasyBuild" does not require tracing complicated but very simple "Attach points "method that can be drawn directly on the tablecloth. For example, the entire boat (A 12) can be written in one afternoon and cut out all forms. The finished weight, minus motor, is approximately thirty odd kilos depending on the weight of ply, epoxy and glass that you use. The painting is a unique piece of ply approximately 20mm in width. Built with composite materials is strong, tough, extremely light and with care will last for years.
SAILS AND SAILING GEAR
All dimensions of the device above is provided with the plan and any the material is available in all local purveyors. The equipment needed is simple, cheap and easy to build for a first time builder.
WHAT TOOLS I need?
Not many. A jigsaw, clamps, an orbital sander, a drill and perhaps an electric planer and a belt sander with a few assorted grade belts would be useful!
Materials – 4 sheets ply for 12 '… 4.5 leaves for 16 ' … 6 sheets ply for 19 '
Plywood sheets 1220mm x 2440mm ply, suitable for boat building. There are many different makes and notes and I will not go into this can of worms, suffice it to say that with the use of epoxy composites you will not necessarily be limited to the folds marine. " Outer plies treated properly will last for many years.
1 piece 15mm ply 3 'x 6'.
About 6 meters 300g glass fabric biaxial.
12 gallons of epoxy resin.
Q-Cells or microspheres.
Assorted widths of Hoop Pine or Meranti 40mm x 10mm for rubbing strakes.
A ribbon of glass, about 4 "wide.
Copper wire or electrical ties.
Several polystyrene fruit boxes.
Twenty or thirty 10 x 40 clipboard screws (for temporary holding purposes).
Primer 1 epoxy liter.
1 liter of enamel gloss.
Several long, thin battens for curves, approximately 15 '
Hardware Requirements for sails and sailing gear will be listed in the plans and can be changed if necessary on the advice of your rigger or sail.
